Derek Bourgeois
Derek David Bourgeois (1941-2017) was an English composer and conductor. He graduated with a first-class honours degree in music and a subsequent Doctorate from Cambridge University. At the Royal College of Music, he studied composition under Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult.
Throughout his prolific career, Bourgeois composed an impressive array of works, including 116 symphonies, seventeen concertos, and various extended orchestral pieces. He also delved into choral and instrumental compositions, creating seven major works for chorus and orchestra, two operas, and a musical. Additionally, he explored chamber, vocal, and instrumental music, and composed extensively for Brass Band and Symphonic Wind Orchestra, producing fifteen extended works and seven symphonies respectively. Bourgeois’s musical talents extended to television productions, where he contributed music for several projects.
Bourgeois made significant contributions to the world of music as a lecturer in music at Bristol University from 1970 to 1984. During the early 1980s, he served as the conductor of the Sun Life Band and held leadership roles in esteemed organizations like the Composers’ Guild of Great Britain and the Music Advisory Panel of the Arts Council.
In 1984, Bourgeois embraced the role of Musical Director for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and in 1988, he founded the National Youth Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain. His musical journey continued with his appointment as Artistic Director of the Bristol Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990.
In later years, he became the Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls’ School in London until his passing in 2017.
