Lennox Berkeley
Berkeley (1903-1989) was a British composer known for his light and vibrant compositions. He pursued his education at Merton College, Oxford, earning a B.A. degree in 1926. In 1927, he went to Paris to study music with Nadia Boulanger, and there became acquainted with Francis Poulenc, Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger and Albert Roussel. Berkeley also studied with Maurice Ravel, often cited as a key influence in Berkeley’s technical development as a composer.
In 1936, Berkeley crossed paths with Benjamin Britten at a music festival, and despite initial reservations, they shared a house in Snape, Suffolk, for a year. This marked the beginning of a profound artistic partnership and lifelong friendship. Their collaboration led to the creation of the orchestral work Mont Juic (1937). Berkeley’s career flourished, and he worked for the BBC during World War II.
Berkeley’s compositions are characterised by their rich melodies and mastery of orchestral texture. Berkeley composed pieces for guitarist Julian Bream and oboist Janet Craxton.
He served as a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music from 1946 to 1968 mentoring notable students such as Richard Rodney Bennett and John Tavener. Berkely held the honorary professorship of music at Keele University from 1976 to 1979, and presided over the Cheltenham International Festival of Music from 1977 to 1983. In recognition of his contributions to music, Berkeley was knighted in 1974.
He wrote numerous works for flute as listed below.
