Arthur Haswell
A family-run business, Arthur Haswell makes, restores, and sells classic handmade flutes.
Arthur Haswell grew up in London where he studied, composed, and played for sessions. After moving north, he had the good fortune to meet the renowned British flute maker William Simmons, who became his mentor. Over the years, Arthur’s experience in all aspects of repair has grown into a passion for restoring handmade classic flutes and making wooden head joints.
More recently, he has moved away from general repairing towards the re-commissioning and restoration of vintage keyed flutes, particularly those in wood or silver made by Rudall Carte, Hawkes, Flutemaker Guild, etc.
Arthur’s business has also developed its own wooden head joints, made in the British tradition but with the needs of today’s players in mind.
Head Joint Testing
Headjoints can radically enhance the sound of most flutes. With a vast array of headpieces made by several respected flute makers worldwide, each one differs by its embouchure cut, lip plate and material. Each headjoint offers different qualities including wide-ranging tonal colours, projection, more/less resistance and ease of articulation. Headjoint choices are entirely subjective! Please note that whilst these head joints are for sale, we advise you to try them before you buy!
Head joints come in lots of shapes and sizes. It is therefore recommended that you try the head joint either in our testing room at All Flutes Plus or by pre-arranged trial within the comfort of your own home.
