Anna Amalia von Preussen
Princess Anna Amalia of Prussia (1723-1787) was a German composer and music curator who served as the Princess-Abbess of Quedlinburg. She was the daughter of Frederick William I of Prussia and the sister of Frederick the Great. Born in Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, she was the 12th child and 7th daughter of King Frederick William I and Princess Sophia Dorothea of Hanover.
Amalia grew up in Berlin and also spent time in the king’s favourite residence in Königs Wusterhausen. Her musical talent was nurtured after the death of her strict and abusive father, who did not approve of music. Amalia’s childhood was overshadowed by her father’s violent behaviour, while her mother, a well-educated and cultured woman, provided her children with a French upbringing. D
Despite the challenges, Amalia found solace in music and received instruction from her brother and mother, becoming proficient in playing the harpsichord, flute, and violin. After the death of her father, her brother Frederick II ascended to the throne in 1740.
