Amirov 6 Pieces for Flute and Piano-Sikorski

Fikret Amirov (1922-1984), a notable composer from Azerbaijan grew up in a household filled with Azerbaijani folk music. His father was a renowned mugam singer and composer. During his early years, Fikret began composing piano pieces and later pursued his musical education at the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire in Baku, studying under Boris Zeidman and Uzeyir Hajibeyov.

In 1941, at the age of 19, Fikret joined the Soviet army when Nazi Germany attacked the USSR. He was wounded and subsequently returned to Baku after being hospitalised and demobilised. Fikret continued his studies at the conservatoire and developed a musical style strongly influenced by Azeri folk melodies. He pioneered a genre called symphonic mugam, which involved classical folk pieces performed by renowned symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Houston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

Fikret Amirov’s extensive body of work encompassed symphonic compositions, ballets, operas, piano pieces, and film scores. His compositions, such as “Shur,” “Kurd Ovshari,” and “Gulustan Bayati-Shiraz,” showcased his talent for blending traditional Azerbaijani and Middle Eastern elements. His dedication to research and exploration of various musical traditions contributed to the rich folkloric elements found in his works.

Amirov’s fusion of musical influences and exploration of Azerbaijani folk traditions made him a celebrated composer.
