John Maynard La Montaine
John Maynard La Montaine, later known as LaMontaine, (1920-2013) was an American pianist and composer, born in Oak Park, Illinois. He was awarded the 1959 Pulitzer Prize for Music[2] for his Piano Concerto No. 1 “In Time of War” (1958), which premiered with Jorge Bolet.
His mentors included Howard Hanson, Bernard Rogers, and Nadia Boulanger. Distinguished performers such as Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Adele Addison, Donald Graham, Robert Silverman, Eleanor Steber, and Jorge Bolet have interpreted his works.
In honour of the American Bicentennial celebration in 1976, he received a commission from the Penn State Institute for Arts and Humanistic Studies to create a choral work. The resulting opera, titled “Be Glad Then America,” was performed by the University Choirs under the direction of Sarah Caldwell, with folk singer Odetta appearing as the Muse for America.
