Jules Mouquet
Jules Mouquet (1867-1946), a French composer, studied harmony and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He received recognition for his cantata Mélusine when he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1896. Additionally, he was honoured with the Prix Trémont in 1905 and the Prix Chartier in 1907 for his chamber music.
In 1913, Mouquet became a professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatoire and wrote a Cours complémentaire d’harmonie.
Most of Mouquet’s compositions are for wind instruments such as the flute, oboe, clarinet, and saxophone. His best-known work is the symphonic poem La Flûte de Pan op. 15, composed for flute and orchestra. He also wrote oratorios, including Le Sacrifice d’Isaac and Le Jugement. Notably, the symphonic poem remains one of his most popular pieces, showcasing his significant contributions to the genre.
