Jean-Marie Leclair, the Elder, was a French violinist, composer, and dancing master, renowned for establishing the French school of violin playing. He was born on May 10, 1697, in Lyon and passed away on October 22, 1764, in Paris.
In 1722, Leclair served as the principal dancer and ballet master in Turin. He later pursued his violin studies under G.B. Somis and embarked on a successful career as a violinist-composer in Paris from 1728. By 1732, his talent was acknowledged in J.G. Walther’s Musicalisches Lexicon.
He became a musician of the royal chamber and travelled to various princely courts. Tragically, Leclair’s final years were marked by despair and distrust, and he was allegedly murdered, possibly by his estranged wife. His musical legacy includes four books of sonatas for violin and continuo, two books of sonatas for two unaccompanied violins, five sets of Récréations for two violins and continuo, and two sets of string concerti. Additionally, he composed the opera Scylla et Glaucus. Remarkably, his brothers Jean-Marie Leclair the Younger, Pierre Leclair, and Jean-Benoît Leclair were also composers and violinists.

He enhanced the status of the flute as a concert instrument through his vast number of recordings from Baroque masterpieces to jazz. He was particularly known for his authentic interpretations of 18th Century music and for his editing skills with the music of the Baroque period.
Rampal’s autobiography, ‘Music, My Love’, was published in 1989.
