Guy Lacour (1932-2013) was a talented French classical composer and tenor saxophonist. His musical journey began in his hometown of Soissons when he started studying music at the age of 10. Lacour became a skilled saxophonist, earning his diploma from the Confédération Musicale de France and continuing his education at the conservatories in Versailles and Paris.
As a versatile musician, Lacour performed in various musical settings, from popular groups in music halls and cabarets to symphony orchestras in concerts and opera houses. In 1961, he became a member of the renowned Marcel Mule Saxophone Quartet, leading to collaborations with esteemed conductors like Herbert von Karajan and Daniel Barenboim.
Lacour’s teaching career began in 1975, where he shared his expertise as a saxophone instructor at several conservatories in Paris. He served on the juries of saxophone performance contests and was a founding member of the Association des Saxophonistes de France. Additionally, he contributed his technical knowledge to the Selmer saxophone firm.
In 1992, Lacour devoted himself entirely to composition, creating a remarkable body of work. Many of his compositions have become standard repertoire and essential pieces for saxophone performance competitions worldwide, solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in the world of saxophone music.
