Ignace Joseph Pleyel was born in 1757 in Austria. He began his musical training as a child and in 1772, he was sent to study with Joseph Haydn. Pleyel’s early career included a position as Kapellmeister to Count Erdödy in Pressburg, and he later served as assistant Kapellmeister and then principal Kapellmeister at Strasbourg Cathedral.
During his time in Strasbourg, Pleyel was highly productive, composing many works between 1787 and 1795. He gained recognition across Europe and North America. In 1791, due to disruptions from the French Revolution, he moved to London, where his concerts and compositions were well-received. By early 1795, Pleyel had relocated to Paris, where he established a music publishing house that became prominent, issuing works by various renowned composers and pioneering the publication of miniature scores.
In 1807, Pleyel founded a piano-manufacturing company in Paris, which prospered under his management. His eldest son, Camille Pleyel, joined the firm in 1815 and played a significant role in its success. Camille was well-regarded in the music world and had connections with prominent figures like Frédéric Chopin.
