Edward Elgar
Edward Elgar English composer, Sir Edward William Elgar (1857-1934) is best known for his compositions including Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, his concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies.
Born into a musical family, Elgar worked briefly in a lawyer’s office before pursuing music. He excelled as a violinist and bassoonist, serving as a bandmaster and church organist. Elgar gained recognition with the Enigma Variations (1898-99), a set of orchestral variations based on a hidden theme representing his friends.
Elgar’s notable compositions include The Dream of Gerontius (1900), an oratorio based on a poem by John Henry Cardinal Newman, often regarded as his masterpiece. Elgar’s programmatic works include Cockaigne, or In London Town (1901) and Falstaff (1913). His Pomp and Circumstance marches, particularly the first, gained worldwide fame. Additionally, Elgar’s two symphonies (1908 and 1911), Introduction and Allegro for Strings (1905), Violin Concerto (1910), and Cello Concerto (1919) are highly regarded.
