Goffredo Petrassi
Petrassi (July 16, 1904 – March 2, 2003) was a highly influential Italian composer of the 20th century. Born in Zagarolo, near Rome, to a modest family, he initially studied voice at the Schola Cantorum di San Salvatore in Rome. Later, he received piano lessons from composer Alessandro Bustini, leading him to pursue composition studies with Bustini and organ studies with Fernando Germani at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. He gained recognition as a composer and conductor, teaching composition and holding various prestigious positions, including a professorship at the Academy of Santa Cecilia from 1959 to 1974.
Petrassi’s compositions exhibited a diverse range of styles, from the early influences of Alfredo Casella and Paul Hindemith to later works reflecting Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg. His choral compositions, such as “Coro di morti,” “Noche oscura,” and “Orationes Christi,” played a significant role in his development. Over time, he explored 12-tone techniques in some of his orchestral works, like the eight concerti for orchestra, showcasing a deeply atonal style. His extensive body of work also includes operas, ballets, chamber and keyboard music, and songs.
