Armstrong Gibbs
Cecil Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960) was a composer, conductor, and adjudicator, who studied under notable figures such as Sir Adrian Boult and Ralph Vaughan Williams. While renowned for his choral music and songs, he also ventured into writing music for the stage, sacred compositions, three symphonies, and a considerable body of chamber music. Gibbs also played a significant role in the amateur choral and festival movements in Britain.
Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was a contemporary of renowned composers Sir Arthur Bliss, Herbert Howells, and Sir Arnold Bax.
His popularity soared when Princess Elizabeth requested his composition “Dusk” on her 18th birthday. Born in Great Baddow, Essex, Gibbs displayed musical talent at a young age and began composing in his thirties.
Despite his father’s desire for him to run the family business, Gibbs pursued a British education and later studied music at Cambridge and the Royal College of Music. Throughout his career, Gibbs taught at various schools, composed for the stage, and actively participated in music festivals.
His melodic style incorporates modal inflexions, arched phrases, and syllabic text settings, reflecting his affinity for popular and British folk songs.
