Michael Head
Michael Head (1900-1976) was a renowned British composer, pianist, organist, and singer, celebrated for his enduring and popular works. He had a significant association with the Royal Academy of Music, where he mainly focused on composing songs, choral pieces, and a few larger-scale works such as a piano concerto.
Michael Head initially studied at the Royal Academy of Music but had to interrupt his studies due to the call for service in the War. During this time, while working at an ammunition factory, he composed his song cycle “Over the Rim of the Moon,” which marked his first published work.
After the war, he resumed his studies at the Academy, learning composition from Frederick Corder, piano from T B Knott, and organ from Reginald Steggall. His career took off after his debut recital as a singer-pianist at Wigmore Hall in 1929. Subsequently, he gained fame and performed recitals in various parts of the world, including several radio recitals in Britain and Canada.
Michael Head held a long-standing position as Piano Professor at the Royal Academy from 1927 until his retirement in 1975. Additionally, he served as an examiner for the ABRSM and toured many countries, fostering friendships and musical connections along the way. Despite the outbreak of World War II, he continued to teach and perform, giving numerous concerts in factories and small towns.
