Composer:Â Reynaldo Hahn
Reynaldo Hahn de Echenagucia (1874-1947) was a Venezuelan-born French composer, conductor, music critic, and singer. Born in Caracas, he moved to Paris with his family at a young age and spent most of his life there. Hahn gained recognition at the age of 14 with his song “Si mes vers avaient des ailes” and became a prominent figure in fin de siècle French society. He had close friendships with renowned individuals such as Sarah Bernhardt and Marcel Proust.
Hahn’s musical repertoire was extensive, including over 100 songs, as well as secular and sacred pieces, operas, operettas, ballets, orchestral works, chamber music, and piano compositions. He was also known for his abilities as a singer and made recordings both as a soloist and as an accompanist. After serving in the army during World War I, Hahn adapted his style to match the changing trends in music and theatre. He achieved success with his opérette Ciboulette (1923) and the musical comedy Mozart (1926), a collaboration with Sacha Guitry. Hahn, who was of Jewish descent, sought refuge in Monaco during World War II but returned to Paris in 1945 and was appointed director of the Opéra. He passed away in Paris in 1947 at the age of 72.
