Composer-Benedetto Marcello
Italian composer/writer, Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) wrote numerous operas, oratorios, cantatas, concerti, and sonatas.
He is particularly remembered for two significant works: the satirical pamphlet “Il Teatro alla moda” (1720) and “Estro Poetico-Armonico” (1724–26), a musical setting of the first 50 psalms in Italian, based on G. Giustiniani’s paraphrase. “Il Teatro alla moda” is an amusing pamphlet where Marcello expressed his views on the state of musical drama during that period. The work gained widespread recognition and stands as an important historical document in the early development of opera.
Although his father intended for him to pursue a career in law, Marcello chose to dedicate himself to music. In 1711, he became a member of the Venetian Council of Forty and later served as governor in Pola (Istria) in 1730. After eight years, he retired to Brescia, where he held the position of papal chamberlain. Marcello’s repertoire includes operas, oratorios, cantatas, concerti, and sonatas. He was not only a composer but also a poet, having translated John Dryden’s “Timotheus” for one of his own cantatas and written a libretto for G. Ruggeri’s opera “Arato in Sparta” (1709).
