Saverio Mercadante

Saverio Mercadante (1795-1870) was a renowned composer and teacher. He played a transitional role in opera composition, bridging the styles of Gaetano Donizetti, Gioacchino Rossini, and Vincenzo Bellini to Giuseppe Verdi. Regarded as a crucial reformer of Italian opera, Mercadante’s influence was notable.

At the age of 11, Mercadante moved to Naples, and in 1808, he enrolled in the San Sebastiano College under an altered identity. During his studies there, he composed several instrumental pieces, including music for ballets. His first opera premiered on January 4, 1819, and within three years, he gained success with five operas, most notably “Elisa e Claudio,” which triumphed at La Scala in Milan.

In 1826, he composed another well-received opera, “Caritea, Regina di Spagna” (also known as “Donna Caritea”). Subsequently, he engaged with Italian opera in Spain and Portugal until around 1830. Mercadante married in 1832 and served as maestro di cappella at Novara Cathedral from 1833 to 1840.

In 1837, Mercadante’s opera “Il Giuramento” (The Oath) showcased his incorporation of lessons learned from Giacomo Meyerbeer’s music, representing one of his best works. He continued seeking a harmonious blend of drama and music, leading the way toward more straightforward vocal lines and serious composition.

From 1840 until his passing on December 17, 1870, Mercadante held the position of head at the Naples Conservatory. Besides operas, he composed sacred music, including masses, cantatas, hymns, orchestral pieces, and various chamber music.
