Verne Reynolds
Reynolds (1926-2011) was a notable American hornist, composer, and educator. He held the esteemed position of Professor Emeritus of Horn at the Eastman School of Music, where he began teaching in 1959. Reynolds obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1950 and his Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1951. His commitment to artistic growth led him to receive a Fulbright grant for study at the Royal College of Music in London, England, from 1953 to 1954.
Throughout his career, Reynolds performed with renowned ensembles such as the Cincinnati Symphony and the American Woodwind Quintet. From 1959 to 1968, he served as the principal horn of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
Before joining the Eastman School of Music, Reynolds shared his expertise as a teacher at institutions including the Cincinnati Conservatory (1949-1950), the University of Wisconsin (1950-1953), and Indiana University (1954-1959). As a founding member of the Eastman Brass, he actively participated in their tours and recordings. In recognition of their remarkable contributions to the brass quintet genre and repertoire expansion, the quintet members were awarded the Kilbourn Professorship in 1983.
Reynolds also established himself as a respected composer, receiving numerous awards and commissions from prestigious orchestras, solo performers, universities, and chamber groups. Notable among his works are compositions for the Eastman Brass, the Cincinnati Symphony, and Doc Severinsen. Reynolds has published a significant collection of original compositions and gained recognition for his skilful transcriptions of Renaissance and Baroque music for brass quintet and horn choir.
