Maria Theresia von Paradis

Maria Theresia von Paradis (1759-1824) was an Austrian musician and composer.

Born in Dahme, near Lübeck, Paradis received a musical education from various teachers, excelling in piano, singing, and composition. She lost her sight at a young aged, but despite this, she had an exceptional memory and accurate hearing, memorising over sixty concertos and a large repertoire of solo and religious works.

In 1783, Paradis embarked on a European tour with her mother and librettist Johann Riedinger. They visited Vienna, Salzburg (where they met the Mozarts), Frankfurt, Switzerland, and finally arrived in Paris in 1784. There, she performed in various concerts and gained acclaim for her virtuosic piano playing. Paradis also played a piano concerto by Joseph Haydn and possibly Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18 (K.456) in Paris.

During her travels, Paradis composed solo piano music and pieces for voice and keyboard. She also wrote five operas and three cantatas between 1789 and 1797. After the failure of her opera “Rinaldo und Alcina,” she focused more on teaching and founded her music school in Vienna in 1808.

Paradis used innovative tools like a composition board and hand-printing machine for her work. Her songs showcased coloratura and trills, while her piano compositions bore the influence of her teacher, Leopold Kozeluch. She continued to teach until her death in 1824, leaving behind a significant musical legacy.

August Nölck

August Nölck (born August Friedrich Robert Nölck; 9 January 1862 in Lübeck – 12 December 1928 in Dresden) was a prolific composer, virtuoso cellist, pianist, and music educator from the German School of Romanticism. He created over 250 sheet music works, many of which endure and are still performed today, with a special emphasis on cello repertoire.

As a professor of cello and piano, Nölck’s diverse compositions included concertos, whims, waltzes, concertinas, gavottes, minuets, mazurkas, funeral marches, and more. However, due to the impact of the two World Wars in Germany and political divisions in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, only his works produced in Venezuela have been recovered.

Nölck belonged to the Dresden School of cello playing, alongside Friedrich Wilhelm Grützmacher, who laid the foundation for the modern cello technique represented by Pablo Casals, Emanuel Feuermann, and others. Nölck’s music echoes the Romantic styles of Brahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn.

He pursued his musical studies at the Bernuthsche Konservatorium in Hamburg, Germany, founded on 1 October 1873 by Julius von Bernuth. During his time at the conservatory, Nölck developed a friendship with fellow student Hugo Rüter, who later became a notable German composer.
