Toshio Hosokawa
Toshio Hosokawa, born in 1955, is a highly regarded Japanese composer renowned for his contemporary classical music. Originating from Hiroshima, he initially pursued piano and composition studies in Tokyo before embarking on further education in Germany. From 1976 to 1983, he had the privilege of studying with Yun Isang at the Berlin University of the Arts, followed by a period from 1983 to 1986 when he deepened his musical understanding under the tutelage of Klaus Huber and Brian Ferneyhough at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg.
Hosokawa’s extensive body of work includes operas, instrumental compositions, and the powerful oratorio “Voiceless Voice in Hiroshima.” His unique artistic style seamlessly weaves together traditional Japanese music and cultural influences, endowing his creations with a distinct character. Notably, his operas, such as “Vision of Lear” and “Hanjo,” have premiered at prestigious festivals and renowned venues, solidifying his standing in the world of contemporary classical music.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hosokawa has received numerous commissions and held the esteemed position of composer in residence at international festivals. His compositions have been brought to life by notable conductors, and he has garnered recognition for his exploration of nature and the concept of beauty in his musical works.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Hosokawa co-founded the Akiyoshidai International Contemporary Music Seminar and Festival, where he currently serves as the artistic director. Moreover, he has shared his expertise through teaching positions and received invitations to prominent festivals and institutions.
