About
In 2017, composer Paul Saunders composed a Trilogy of Flute pieces titled ‘Flights with My Flute,’ drawing inspiration from the theme of flying.
The first movement, named ‘Vapour Trails,’ exudes a relaxed Latin feel that persists throughout the piece, evoking the soothing emotions one experiences while daydreaming about faraway holidays. Intermittent 5/4 sections provide a contrast, symbolising the awkward process of navigating through airports and reaching your destination.
The middle movement, ‘Coasting With Eagles,’ beautifully portrays the majestic soaring of large birds of prey gliding through the skies for hours at a time.
In the final movement, ‘Eye of the Storm,’ the composition narrates the journey of a small plane flying through a thunderstorm. The flute’s initial entry represents the appearance of raindrops, and as the piece progresses, the intensity of the “weather” builds. Ultimately, it culminates in the “Eye of the Storm,” accompanied by a corresponding shift in mood and ambience.
