Egon Wellesz
Egon Wellesz (1885-1974), an Austrian composer and musicologist, was highly regarded for his expertise in Byzantine music. He studied under Guido Adler in musicology and Arnold Schoenberg in composition. Wellesz taught at the University of Vienna from 1930 to 1938 before moving to England in 1939. In England, he became a prominent teacher at the University of Oxford.
His contributions to musicology secured his significance in the field. Although influenced by Schoenberg’s 12-tone method, Wellesz’s compositions still maintained tonality as a fundamental aspect. His extensive body of work includes operas, ballets, nine symphonies, chamber music, and Roman Catholic church music.
