Stanhope Concerto for Piccolo and Piano
Stanhope Concerto for Piccolo and Piano
Publisher-Trubcher Publishing
About
The composition consists of two movements with inverted symmetrical shapes. The first movement, titled “Hymn,” incorporates fragments of the renowned tune “Love Unknown” by John Ireland. It combines elements of a Chorale Prelude and variations, alternating between lyrical expression and lively dance-like figures.
The second movement is a Scherzo named “Wheels Within Wheels,” reflecting the pace of our digital era and the intricate rhythmic layers marked as “Funky and Fleet-Footed.” The piece features vibrant orchestration and an extended solo cadenza in the middle.
* This piccolo concerto was first performed by Andrew Macleod with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Northey in June 2013 and is available as a CD and to download. The video features the alternate Chamber Orchestra version.
