About
“Sexe-tuor” originated as an unsuccessful attempt by the composer to create a solo oboe piece for the “noyé” cycle. The original intention was to name the solo “le sexe du noyé,” and the few measures of “sexe-tuor” served as the composer’s first attempt to craft a piece with more complex rhythms, aiming to multiply individual fragments from the sextet, “le retour du noyé” (hence the name “sextuor”).
However, this approach turned out to be excessively complicated and impractical. Consequently, the ten measures of the “sexe-tuor” fragment came to symbolize a capitulation in the face of these complexities, representing the interruption of an immovable column of air in a frozen multiphonic sound.
Fortunately, a straightforward solution presented itself: When composing “le sexe du noyé,” the composer discovered that the proportionalities of pitch levels and rhythmic values revealed significant rhythmic possibilities. Therefore, “sexe-tuor” remains a solo piece that can also function as an intermezzo between other larger works in a concert program.
This 90-second composition can be performed in two versions: either for solo piccolo or solo oboe.
Walter Feldmann
Born in Glarus in 1965, Walter Feldmann graduated from high school and pursued studies in literature, linguistics, and musicology at the University of Zurich before fully dedicating himself to music. His musical journey followed an unconventional path: as a self-taught flautist with formal training under Dominique Hunziker and Anne Utagawa in Aarau, he made a name for himself as both a flautist and a composer in the music world. Since 1998, he has been an active member of the flute octet les joueurs de flute.
In 1986, Walter Feldmann delved into composition, furthering his knowledge through music informatics courses at Ircam in Paris. His compositions quickly gained international recognition, attracting commissions from prestigious festivals and orchestras, including Ircam Festival Agora Paris, Tage für Neue Musik Zurich, Stuttgart, and Zurich, and performances by renowned ensembles such as SWR Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, Collegium Novum Zurich, Ensemble Contrechamps, and Ensemble Proton. His works are published by Carus Verlag Stuttgart and Éditions Marta.
Beyond his creative endeavors, Walter Feldmann enthusiastically shares his musical expertise as a music teacher. He taught flute at the music school in Steinhausen (Zug) from 1993 to 2012 and later became the Flute teacher at the Alte Kantonsschule in Aarau in 2009 and at the cantonal school in Zofingen in 2018. Since August 2017, he has served as the head of the top music support program in the canton of Aargau. Additionally, he has arranged a wide range of works for the school flute and woodwind ensemble, encompassing pieces by composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Holst, Schönberg, Turina, and Albéniz.
