Bohuslav Martinu
Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1959) was a modern Czech composer renowned for his unique fusion of French and Czech influences in his compositions.
From an early age, Martinů studied the violin and later joined the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in 1913. His ballet “Istar” and symphonic poem “MizejÃcà půlnoc” (Vanishing Midnight) gained significant success in 1922. Seeking further education, he studied under Josef Suk, a leading figure in the Czech music nationalism movement, and later, under the French composer Albert Roussel in Paris.
During the German invasion of France in 1940, Martinů fled to the United States, where he taught at Princeton University and the Berkshire Music Center. Despite plans to return to Prague after World War II, he remained mostly in the United States until 1957, serving as composer in residence at the American Academy in Rome.
Martinů’s orchestral works, such as “Half-Time” and “La Bagarre,” were inspired by contemporary events, and he showcased his polyphonic writing skills in the “Concerto Grosso for chamber orchestra.” Notable pieces include the powerful “Double Concerto” expressing Czech suffering after the partition of Czechoslovakia, and the poignant “Memorial to Lidice,” commemorating victims of Nazi atrocities.
Throughout his prolific career, Martinů composed symphonies, concerti for various instruments, string quartets, and works for piano, harpsichord, voice, and unaccompanied cello and violin. His music combined the vitality and charm of Czech folk music with a modern Neoclassical style influenced by French clarity and precision.
