Jazz Paraphrase for Flute by Jeffery Wilson

About
Jazz Paraphrase is a set of pieces which emulate the styles of various famous jazz players.
Rahsaan
Noted for his ability to play more than one wind instrument at once, Rahsaan Roland Kirk brought vitality and political insight to the stage. For this writer as a ‘serious-minded youth’ Kirk was also inspired by an irrepressible sense of fun.
Jusef
Having an interest in Eastern music before the term ‘World Music’ was coined Yusef Lateef was ahead of his time. His Flute-playing raised the status of the instrument in Jazz.
Nestor
The Puerto Rican Flute player Nestor Torres brings a mix of Caribbean and South American to his improvisations and, I feel, a certain spiritual sincerity to the music.
The Mann
An early pioneer of fusion and ‘world music’ Herbie Mann worked with some great musicians including Chick Corea, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Phil Woods.
Obey Laws
Equally at home in Classical and Jazz music Hubert Laws is a fluent improviser with a detailed approach to articulation and sound colours in his varied improvisations.
Get Downes
Bob Downes is a British Flute and Sax player who inspired this writer with his contemplative solo flute lines and hypnotic improvisations.
A Bit Moody
A much-travelled Saxophonist and Flautist, James Moody brought the latter instrument to some fine recordings for the Blue Note and Prestige labels. As a player, he cultivated a virtuosic fluency in his improvisations.
Dolphy Does It
The angular lines and ‘animalistic’ sounds from this giant of 1960s jazz music are reflected in this ‘Tukra’ below, dedicated to Eric Dolphy.
For Tubby
Tubby Hayes played Saxophone, Vibes and Flute with equal fluidity and technical conviction. Perhaps one of the finest British Jazz musicians of his generation his life was cut short yet we have some fine recordings to remember him by.
Jeffrey Wilson
Jeffery Wilson is primarily renowned as a composer, having studied at the Royal College of Music, Cambridge, and Paris under the guidance of notable mentors, including John Lambert, Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob, and Olivier Messiaen. His musical performances and recordings span a wide spectrum, ranging from pop and jazz to classical and contemporary genres. He is a regular performer with ‘Saxology’ and leads his band, ‘The Reduced History of Jazz.’
Currently, Jeffery holds crucial positions in the music education field. He is both the coordinator and a Professor of Composition at Junior Guildhall. Additionally, he holds the position of Professor of Saxophone at the Royal Military School of Music. Jeffery’s jazz expertise led him to serve as Principal examiner (Jazz) for Guildhall Exams, and he now advises and examines for Trinity College London. Moreover, he dedicated years to supervising the music faculty at Cambridge University and acted as a visiting lecturer at Utrecht Conservatorium in Holland.
