Giuseppe Tartini
Tartini (1692-1770) was an Italian composer and violinist of the Baroque era. Born in Pirano (now part of Slovenia), Tartini is renowned for his prolific output, composing over a hundred pieces for the violin, with a particular emphasis on violin concertos. However, he is most famously remembered for his Violin Sonata in G Minor, known as the Devil’s Trill Sonata.
Tartini’s musical journey began with basic training in his hometown and continued with violin studies in Capodistria. After marrying Elisabetta Premazore, he faced legal trouble and sought refuge in the monastery of St. Francis in Assisi, where he studied under Bohuslav MatÄ›j ÄŒernohorský. Inspired by Francesco Maria Veracini, Tartini secluded himself in Ancona, dedicating himself to practice. He later became the Maestro di Cappella at the Basilica di Sant’Antonio in Padua and established a renowned violin school. Tartini’s contributions to music theory and his ownership of prized Stradivarius violins further solidify his impact on the musical world.
Tartini’s repertoire encompasses a wealth of compositions, with his most renowned work being the “Devil’s Trill Sonata.” This solo violin sonata showcases Tartini’s technical prowess through demanding double-stop trills, remaining challenging even by modern standards. His vast collection predominantly comprises violin concertos (at least 135) and violin sonatas.
