Franz Ignaz Danzi
Danzi (1763-1826) was a German cellist, composer and conductor who was a prominent figure within a talented German family of musicians with Italian heritage. With a prolific body of work that encompassed operas, church music, lieder, symphonies, and concerti, it is his chamber music, particularly for woodwind ensemble, that has earned him widespread recognition.
Danzi’s musical journey began by studying the cello under the guidance of his father, who hailed from Italy. Displaying remarkable talent, he joined the renowned Mannheim orchestra at the tender age of 15. In 1790, he entered into matrimony with Margarethe Marchand, a gifted singer, and together they embarked on successful tours, with Danzi assuming the role of conductor. Tragically, his wife passed away in 1800, prompting his retirement. However, in 1807, Danzi accepted the position of kapellmeister in Stuttgart, where he provided support and influenced the work of the much younger composer, Carl Maria von Weber. Subsequently, in 1812, he relocated to Karlsruhe to undertake a similar role.
Franz Danzi’s lasting legacy lies in his exceptional chamber music compositions, particularly for woodwind ensembles.
