Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin
Pierre Gabriel Buffardin (ca. 1690–1768) was a renowned flautist and composer from the late Baroque period. He was a pioneer of the transverse flute in Germany and one of the most famous flautists of his time. From 1715 to 1749, Buffardin was the first flautist in the Dresden Hofkapelle, recognised as one of the finest and most celebrated orchestras of that era. During his tenure, he worked alongside prominent musicians like Pisendel, Veracini, Weiss, and the esteemed flautist Johann Joachim Quantz, whom he also taught.
Born on 24th March 1693 in Toulon, France, Buffardin was the son of Jean-Joseph Buffardin, a skilled instrument maker. His musical journey led him to become the principal flautist in the orchestra at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden. This prestigious position allowed him to leave a lasting impact on the music world.
Buffardin’s influence as a teacher extended to notable flautists, including Johann Joachim Quantz, Pietro Grassi Florio, and Johann Sebastian Bach’s elder brother, Johann Jacob Bach. Their encounters and connections in Constantinople in 1711 enriched the world of music and contributed to the transverse flute’s popularity.
Throughout his career, Buffardin’s exceptional skills and musical prowess garnered him widespread recognition and admiration. His contributions to music as a flautist, composer, and teacher continue to be celebrated and remembered in the annals of musical history.
