About
Wood composed ‘Valse Caprice’ in 1909 and dedicated it to Edith Penville, a prominent female flautist in London.
While not much is known about this piece, it showcases elegant, flowing lines that seamlessly blend dazzling fast passages with sparkling melodies. Interestingly, the Valse shares striking resemblances with other works featured in Rudall Carte’s publication “The Flute Player’s Journal” from the 1920s, which was famously associated with Edith Penville’s repertoire.
Daniel S. Wood, a renowned British flautist, holds his fame as the original principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra since its establishment in 1904. He was not only a skilled orchestral flautist but also a prominent teacher and performer actively involved in London’s vibrant musical scene.
Wood’s contributions extended to education as well, evident in his method book titled “Studies for Facilitating the Execution of the Upper Notes on the Flute.” His expertise and influence as a teacher were well-known, adding to his stature in the music community.
