Samuel Zyman
Samuel Zyman (1956-) is a prominent figure in the global music scene, known for his vibrant compositions featuring rhythmic energy, expressive lyricism, and near-jazzy imitative counterpoint. His music reflects both his Mexican heritage and Jewish roots. Among his acclaimed works, Sonata for Flute and Piano No. 1 is a staple in standard repertoire, performed worldwide. The orchestral piece, Encuentros, is also well-known for its colourful, highly rhythmic Mexican style.
Zyman’s catalogue spans diverse genres, including chamber works, concertos, symphonies, and solo piano pieces. Beyond composing, he has contributed to the musical world by creating music for the modern dance piece, Sacrifixio, celebrating the peace accord in Colombia, and the concerto for guitar and orchestra, Sefarad, inspired by Sephardic themes.
Over the years, Zyman’s compositions have gained international recognition and been performed by esteemed ensembles worldwide. His music is featured in films and on numerous CDs. Published by the Theodore Presser Company, Zyman’s works captivate audiences across the United Kingdom, Mexico, Latin America, Europe, Russia, New Zealand, and other countries, with performances by ensembles like the American Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Grant Park Orchestra of Chicago, National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, and many others.
Zyman’s musical journey began in Mexico City, where he studied piano and conducting at the National Conservatory of Music. He pursued counterpoint and analysis with the revered Mexican composer Humberto Hernández Medrano. Additionally, he studied piano under the legendary Mexican jazz pianist Juan José Calatayud and Héctor Jaramillo, principal flautist of the National Autonomous University Orchestra of Mexico, OFUNAM. Furthering his education, Zyman earned MM and DMA degrees in composition from The Juilliard School in New York City, studying with the American composers Stanley Wolfe, Roger Sessions, and David Diamond.
