Jacob Thune Hansen Gade
Jacob Thune Hansen Gade (1879-1963) was a Danish violinist and composer, renowned for his orchestral popular music. His most notable creation is the captivating tune, Jalousie (also known as Jalousie “Tango Tzigane” and Tango Jalousie).
Born in Vejle, Denmark on 29 November 1879, Gade came from a family of musicians. He displayed his musical talent from an early age and began playing the trumpet at the age of nine. By the age of 12, he became a soloist in the orchestra of the famous Tivoli Garden amusement park in Copenhagen. His passion for music led him to study the violin with his father and later with skilled teachers in the capital city.
Gade pursued his dream of becoming an orchestra conductor and composing waltzes. He faced numerous challenges but eventually found opportunities to perform in various venues and operettas. In 1900, his toast song “Der er sollys i modne druer” gained popularity, and he continued to compose country music and polkas.
As a skilled composer and performer, Gade led several orchestras and performed at theaters and cinema theaters accompanying silent films. He adopted various pseudonyms, which contributed to his international recognition as the “king of waltz.”
Gade’s pinnacle came with the worldwide success of his composition, Jalousie, performed for the first time during the premiere of the American movie “Don Q. Son of Zorro” in 1925. The royalties from Jalousie were so substantial that the song became a continuous radio hit.
After the triumph of Jalousie, Gade focused solely on musical composition and retired to a country house. He continued to create beautiful works like Rhapsodietta and the tango Romanesca. He returned to the United States in 1939, and during the Nazi invasion of Denmark in 1940, he composed more tangos and waltzes while living on Fiskerleje Island.
Jalousie’s fame led to legal disputes over publishing rights, but Gade’s musical legacy lived on, with his music featured in over 100 movies and numerous television series.
