German composer, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, (1714-1788, Hamburg) was the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and the leading composer of the early Classical period. C.P.E. Bach also had an enviable reputation as a performer and teacher.
He composed a vast number of works including concerti, symphonies, chamber music, songs, religious music and organ works amongst others.
In 1740 he was appointed harpsichordist to Frederick II of Prussia. Frederick was an accomplished flautist and would regularly perform flute concerti with the court orchestra.
