Johan Helmich Roman
Roman (1694-1758) was a Swedish Baroque composer, often referred to as “the father of Swedish music” or “the Swedish Handel.” He played a prominent role in Swedish Opera during the Age of Liberty.
Born in Stockholm to Johan Roman, a member of the Swedish royal chapel, Johan received his initial music lessons from his father. He joined the royal chapel as a violinist and oboist in 1711, later obtaining permission to study abroad in London under Johann Christoph Pepusch. During his time in London, Roman was influenced by renowned composers like George Frideric Handel.
In 1731, Roman conducted the first public concerts in Sweden, showcasing his compositions, including a collection of 12 sonatas for flute, violone, and harpsichord published in 1727. He married twice, and his career thrived until the early 1740s, when health problems and the death of his influential patron, Queen Ulrika Eleonora, affected his work. Roman’s “Drottningholm Music” is one of his well-known works, composed for the wedding of Crown Prince Adolf Frederick of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia in 1744.
In his final years, Roman lived in Ryssby, near Kalmar, where he translated European theoretical treatises into Swedish and adapted sacred texts. His legacy endures, with commemorations held by the Royal Academy of Sciences nine years after his death, and copies of his works found in manuscripts until 1810. Roman’s extensive repertoire includes symphonies, overtures, violin and harpsichord sonatas, psalms, motets, and various other compositions.
