About
Christopher Ball composed three virtuosic solo flute pieces that celebrate the myth of Pan. Christopher Ball-Composer
Christopher Ball (1936-2022), had a versatile career spanning multiple musical roles. He began as a clarinettist and later became an orchestral conductor, recorder player, publisher, arranger, and composer. Additionally, he found success as an award-winning photographer.
He studied clarinet and piano at the RNCM and continued his clarinet studies at the Royal Academy of Music with renowned clarinettists Jack Brymer, Reginald Kell, and Gervase de Peyer. Ball also delved into conducting under the guidance of Maurice Miles and participated in masterclasses with conductors including Pierre Monteux, Constantin Silvestri, Sir Charles Mackerras, Norman Del Mar, and Sir Georg Solti.
In 1971, Ball founded the Praetorius Consort, an early music ensemble, performaning at Wigmore Hall and various European festivals throughout the 1970s. He also established the London Baroque Trio, showcasing his recorder skills alongside Mary Verney on harpsichord and Peter Vel on bass viol.
Ball served as a professor of clarinet and recorder at the Royal Academy of Music for over four decades, mentoring notable students like clarinettist Leslie Craven.
From the mid-1990s, Ball shifted his focus to composition. His works encompassed nine concertos for various instruments, including recorder, oboe, clarinet, flute, French horn, cor anglais, violin, and two dedicated to cellist Stjepan Hauser. He also composed chamber pieces like the Clarinet Quintet, Caprice on a Baroque Theme, wind quintet Scenes From A Comedy, and Invocations of Pan. Ball’s music has been described as tonal and in the “easy-listening tradition,” evoking a benevolent eclecticism that embraces pleasant melodies and avoids dissonance.
